Sci-Fi Thrash Invasion with REDUX 🛸🎸
Welcome to the very first entry of the Taine Multimedia Studio Journal! I decided to start this series to give you a front-row seat to the creative chaos, the gear-talk, and the sonic alchemy that happens within these walls.
Today’s mission? Capturing the cosmic fury of REDUX, a band that blends the aggression of Thrash Metal with a deep Sci-Fi atmosphere. When you’re dealing with high-speed riffs and complex arrangements, “good enough” just doesn’t cut it. You need a tone that cuts through the vacuum of space.
The Signal Chain: Engineering the “Death Ray” Tone
To achieve that signature REDUX punch, we went for a classic yet lethal combination:
- The Heart: An Engl Powerball head. Known for its incredible gain stages and tight low-end, it was the perfect choice for those rapid-fire thrash alternate picking sections.
- The Muscle: A Blackstar Cabinet loaded with Celestion V30s. There’s a reason V30s are the industry standard for metal—they provide that mid-range bite that ensures the guitars sit perfectly in the mix without getting muddy.
- The Ears: We opted for a dual-mic setup to get the best of both worlds:
- Shure SM57: Positioned slightly off-axis for that raw, aggressive “grunt.”
- AKG C414: Used to capture the high-end clarity and the sophisticated texture of the Sci-Fi layers.
The Result
The synergy between the Engl’s saturation and the precision of the microphones resulted in a guitar wall that is both massive and articulate. Watching the guys from Redux nail their takes was a blast—there’s nothing like the energy of a band that knows exactly what they want to hear.
“In metal production, the magic happens at the intersection of great performance and the right choice of gear. Today, we found that sweet spot.” — Andy Ionescu
